THE long trip to St Andrews, the home of golf, paid dividends for two young Caithness golfers last weekend.

Reay Golf Club’s Eleanor Tunn and Lauren Ross returned home with two of the four major trophies from the University of St Andrews’ first-ever School Girls Golf Tournament.

It was held over the St Andrews links and gave the girls a chance to compete on two different courses over the weekend.

It was a rainy day on the Strathyrum course on the Saturday’s.

Eleanor, despite a double and triple bogey on the last two holes, recorded the low gross with 70. Lauren, new to competition so far from home, returned a remarkable Stableford score of 43 points, a nett 60.

Worsening conditions on day two saw them play the much longer Jubilee course.

Despite the rain, wind and a nine on the par-five sixth, Eleanor’s gross 80 was enough to retain her lead in the gross event as well as give her second place in the Stableford points competition. She was awarded the S5

Lauren continued her form from the previous day and her nett 65 (39 points) added to her first-day score meant she topped the Stableford points for her group, receiving the S3

Evan Sutherland, Reay’s junior coach, said: “I admire the commitment and sacrifices of both girls and their parents and I hope the girls will work hard over the winter to continue the improvements they have made over the year.

“Bringing two of the four major trophies for the event back to Caithness is a wonderful achievement.

The Caithness and North Sutherland Junior Golf Partnership, run by Evan and Thurso Golf Club’s past captain, David Lyall, is always available to help clubs, coaches and individuals to produce the next young girl and boy golfing stars.
