FORMER Rangers and Scotland goalkeeper Andy Goram had praise for Wick Academy after their 5-3 victory over Nairn County last week.

The Gers legend was in Caithness for a sportsmen’s dinner as part of Scorries’ player Gary Manson’s testimonial year.

“A fine performance,” was how he described Academy’s on-field exploits against the title challengers.

And he quipped that the last time he had seen black-and-white stripes on shirts was when Rangers were beaten by Juventus in 1995.

The dinner was deemed a huge success by the 132 guests who gathered at the Mackays Hotel on Saturday evening.

They enjoyed the after-dinner talk from Goram who, in his laid-back style, gave a behind-the-scenes glimpse of his years in football and his off-field escapades, as well as a witty preview of a 2025 edition of The Sun which reported how Rangers had just won their 17th consecutive title!

Master of ceremonies Martin Johnston conducted the auction, which raised £3770, while comedian Scott Glynn entertained his audience with a quick-fire delivery of anecdotes and quips.

The Sunday golf outing went ahead in glorious sunshine.

Speaking after the dinner, Goram told the John O’Groat Journal that he had really enjoyed his second visit to Caithness – his first being in 1990 for the World Cup Roadshow with team-mate Ally McCoist.

He was also delighted to renew some old acquaintances, namely the Wick and Nairn managers. He said: “To arrive at the game at Harmsworth Park and meet a couple of guys I hadn’t seen for a long time – Les Fridge [Nairn] and Davie Kirkwood – was good.

“As for the game – a fine performance by Wick, though the last time I saw black-and-white stripes was when we got humped 4-1 by Juventus.”

He added: “Everybody at the club looked after us really well – they’re good people.”

Glynn said: “It was Andy who recommended that I come up to Wick with him for the dinner. It was a great day, the Academy people were so generous with their hospitality at the clubhouse and then a lovely crowd at the dinner.

“It was absolutely fantastic; everybody has been so good to us.”
