The organisers of Caithness Banger Club's first derby were praised for pulling together an exciting afternoon of thrills and spills in the face of relentless downpours just hours before the event at North Killimster Farm was about to get under way.

More than 30 bangers turned out to compete over three heats with three races in each – a reversing race, a 4x4 race, a ladies' race and an all-comers' battle at the end.

Overall champion was Alexander Campbell of Lybster who drove a smart and slick Pug 1.1. Campbell also took the best reverse driving race.

Topping the ladies' event was Frances Sutherland, also Lybster, who competed behind the wheel of a Subaru.

Race commentator Willie Mackay said afterwards: "Considering a bad overnight wet weather window which made driving very tricky on the stubble field for all the competitors, there was lots of fun out on the course – much to the enjoyment of the many spectators who braved the conditions to enjoy top banger racing at its best.

"There were thrills galore with some bangers coming to grief halfway round the circuit only to be given a helping bump start hand by the powerful tractors that were on duty throughout the event.

"It was a very social, sporty and family occasion which hopefully will be repeated in 2020."
