CO-manager Ross Sutherland says Pentland United must not let the thought of goal difference get into their heads when they face Wick Thistle at Upper Bignold tonight.

The Dunnet outfit moved top of the table on goal difference after beating High Ormlie Hotspur 5-1 at Ham Park on Tuesday night.

The win moved the Stabbies top by just one goal, with Wick Groats’ match at Thurso Acks being abandoned on Tuesday night after Acks player manager Craig Trueman suffered a serious knee injury and was taken to hospital.

With two games remaining, the league title could come down to goal difference.

Sutherland says while looking to produce a good attacking performance, they must look to play their natural game rather than be obsessed with scoring as many goals as possible tonight.

“If we start thinking about scoring as many goals as possible, we run the risk of taking our eye off the ball,” he said.

“The first thing we need to make sure of is that we get the win, then we can start thinking where that could take us.

“We have to realise that Wick Thistle have something to play for as they continue to fight against relegation and we have to take that into consideration on Friday.”

Pentland United will face High Ormlie Hotspur in the Highland Amateur Cup final at Harmsworth Park in Wick on Saturday, August 20.

Despite their impressive 5-1 league victory over High Ormlie on Tuesday, Sutherland doesn’t think that result will be a factor, come the final next weekend.

“I don’t think it will be an influence. I wasn’t at the game, but I know we made changes and they made changes.

“We wanted to freshen things up as when we play Thistle we will have played three games in the space of six days.

“No team in Caithness can play those amount of games with the same starting 11.”
