Reay and Wick co-hosted the NC500 Links Open, a 36-hole strokeplay event which is always a highlight of the summer golfing calendar.

Round one at Reay, sponsored by CS Drilling Services, saw players contending with a tricky breeze for much of the day and this was reflected in the scoring. Only one, Reay’s Willie Paton, posted a nett score below par after an excellent round of 82 for nett 68.

Hot on his heels were Cameron Reid of Thurso, after a fine round of 72 for nett 69, and Andy Bain, of the host club, who fired a solid round of 77 for nett 69.

In the scratch competition Reid’s 72 saw him in a share of the lead with Reay’s Michael Smith, with Wick’s Nicky Klimas next best after a round of 74.

Day two at Wick saw the early starters helped by a tailwind but this soon abated, leaving calm conditions which many in the field took advantage of.

In the handicap competition, Paton maintained his fine form to post an excellent round of nett 70 to take the overall prize on 138.

Mark Mackay of Wick fired the best nett round of the weekend, a spectacular nett 62 to finish a stroke behind, with Wick players Stewart Ross and David Brims next best on 140.

In the scratch competition Nicky Klimas fired a fabulous round of 66 to take the trophy with an impressive aggregate score of 140.

A second round of 72 for the weekend saw Michael Smith take second on 144, with Cameron Reid completing the podium places after a round of 80 gave him a total of 152.

In the other sections Denis Harvey of Stromness took division one on a fine aggregate score of 142, edging out Cammie Ross on countback, with Owen Cormack third on 144.

In division two Stewart Ross, on 140, took the spoils ahead of Sandy Sutherland on 142 and Graeme Mackay on 144.

Mark Mackay bagged division three on 139 ahead of David Brims on 140 and Thurso’s Ross Williamson on 145.

Meanwhile, in round four of the Abbott Risk Consulting Summer Cup, Willie Paton maintained his excellent form to top the standings with an impressive score of 38 points which included eight pars and could have been even better but for two non-counting holes.

Leslie Malcolm fired a birdie at the tough seventh on his way to 38 points and second place, with Gavin Gunn and Arthur Paton next best on 37.

Cammie Ross fired a brace of birdies at the first and 11th on his way to 36 points and fifth place on the day.

This Saturday sees the women competing in their June Medal, while the men will play for the President’s Salver. On Sunday the women and men will be competing in the Tennent’s Cup Texas Pairs.
