Football leagues cancel all matches as Storm Amy set to hit Highlands and Islands this weekend





A number of leagues have announced that it has cancelled all of its matches tomorrow as a result of a storm which is set to hit the north this weekend.

The North Caledonian League have announced that all six matches scheduled to take place on Saturday have been cancelled due to the potential impact of Storm Amy.

They include Clachnacuddin A v Thurso and Halkirk United v Fort William.

A statement from the North Caledonian Football Association said: “Due to Storm Amy and the Amber weather warning in place, the North Caledonian FA has taken the decision to postpone all North Caledonian League fixtures scheduled for Saturday, October 4.

”The safety of players, coaches, officials, and supporters is paramount, and this decision has been made with travel and weather conditions in mind.

”Further updates on rearranged fixtures will be communicated in due course.”

The North of Scotland Football League have also confirmed that all matches in the North of Scotland Premiership and Championship have been cancelled.

In the Highlands, this has affected the Championship match between Nairn St Ninian and Glentanar which was due to take pace at Nairn Showfield tomorrow at 2pm.

Matches involving Moray clubs have also been affected, in the Premiership include Islavale v Buchanhaven Hearts and Lossiemouth United v Ellon United. In the Championship, matches include Dufftown v Banchory St Ternan, Forres Thistle v Whitehills, Hall Russell United v New Elgin, Newmachar United v Burghead Thistle.

A statement from the North of Scotland Football League said: “The NoSFL Management Committee have made the decision in the interest of our member clubs to postpone all fixtures tomorrow due to the arrival of Storm Amy with winds of speeds of 45-65mph expected across the region which will make travelling difficult but also make a farce of the game itself if it went ahead.

We hope you understand as it is always difficult to make decisions of this nature but we have not only taken into account our officials and players but also our loyal supporters at our clubs who deserve to watch good fair games of football.”

All matches in the Highland League are still scheduled to go ahead, however it is believed The Scottish Highland Football League are monitoring the weather closely and will review throughout the day once information has been circulated from the Met Office.

All Scottish Professional Football League matches, including Ross County v Raith Rovers in the Championship and Hamilton Academical v Inverness Caledonian Thistle in League One is still scheduled to go ahead.

The Met Office has extended its Amber warning for Storm Amy through Saturday as wind speeds and potential impacts rise across the Highlands and Islands.

Yellow warnings for wind and rain remain in place, highlighting the risk of dangerous conditions, travel disruption, and localised flooding. A new warning is expected to cover Saturday.

The Amber warning for much of the Highlands and Western Isles signals a risk to life from flying debris and potential damage to buildings. Gusts of 60–70mph are expected widely, with 70–80mph in exposed areas and up to 100mph in parts of western Lochaber, Skye, and Tiree this evening.
