Caithness Ladies can have a say in who wins the SWF Highlands and Islands League when they play their last match of the season against Sutherland at Couper Park in Helmsdale on Sunday.

Sutherland are involved in a three-way contest for the title alongside Ross County and reigning champions Buckie, with only two points separating the teams.

Caithness are out of contention in fourth place.

Head coach Tom McKenna said: “We can still have a say in the title race. It’s the last game of the season, we’ll go down there with no pressure on us and enjoy it, and try to finish the season off on a high.

“We’ll look forward to the game. We’ll then get a good rest and start again.”

Caithness were beaten 1-0 by Sutherland in the cup semi-finals last month. In last weekend’s final, Sutherland lost by the same scoreline to Buckie as the Moray side lifted the trophy for the third season in a row.

The final attracted a crowd of more than 300 to King George V Park in Golspie and it was settled by a great first-half strike from Rheo Laurenson.

Buckie manager Laura Duncan said: “It was nail-biting, such a close game.

“To be honest, Sutherland were the better team on the day but we dug deep and saw the game out. Our resilience was something else and all of the players were back helping defend when necessary.”

Buckie beat Caithness 3-1 at Nairn in last year’s final.
