Mervyn Hill from the Nethercliffe Hotel kept up a 30-year sponsorship commitment to Wick Groats when he handed over a new strip to the team this week.

Mervyn, who runs the hotel along with his wife Helen, said: “We’ve sponsored Wick Groats for the last 30 years. It started with my father [the late Denis Hill] and we’ve carried it on, through good years and bad times.

“They’ve been very successful since I’ve been sponsoring them. They’ve won Highland Amateur Cups, eight league titles on the trot... I wish them well for the current season. It has been a wee bit of a sticky start but you get that in football. Hopefully the new strip will spur them on!”
