Munro masters breezy conditions to take March Medal
The fairways have been busy at Reay over the past couple of weeks with the women’s, men’s and senior sections all in action.
The men’s March Medal was won by Colin Munro, who mastered the breezy conditions best to post a score of 77 for nett 69.
An outward half of 38 and inward 39, which included a birdie at the 16th, was good enough to win by a single shot.
Malcolm Thomson took second place on countback ahead of Stuart Greig after both finished on nett 70.
The women’s March Medal was claimed by Carole Cameron after a fine round of 96 for nett 72 in a tough wind. A brace of birdies at the fifth and 13th holes helped her to the win.
Carol Paterson was next best after a birdie at the second helped her to a round of 88 for nett 77, a shot ahead of Jacqui Greig who finished on nett 78.
In the penultimate round of the North Point Distillery seniors’ eclectic competition, a birdie at the 18th helped Pete McCartney to victory on 35 Stableford points.
A trio of players – Stuart Greig, who birdied the seventh, John Brock and Donald Bain, who birdied the 12th – all finished on 34 points.
In the overall eclectic standings, Stuart Greig leads Alex Anderson on countback, with both players sitting on a score of 59. Ian Ross and Donald Bain lead the chasing pack on 64.
Halves of 40 and 41 helped Carol Paterson to a winning score of 36 points in round three of the women’s Winter League Stableford. Solid rounds from Su Hawes and Jacqui Greig saw them finish in joint second place on 29.
Another windy day in the men’s February Eclectic saw Willie Steven top the standings ahead of Andy Bain and David R Craig on countback after all three players finished on scores of nett 71.
A birdie at the third provided a boost to Bain’s overall eclectic score and he now heads the standings with one round to go on a score of 60. Lee Parnell lies in second, also on 60, with Steve Efemey handily placed in third on 61.
The seniors were also in Texas Scramble action, with teams of three competing. Birdies at the seventh, 13th, 15th, 17th and 18th saw Alan Buchanan, David A Craig and Stuart Greig seal the win with a score of 57.
Birdies at the fifth and 16th helped Graham Harness, Alistair Gunn and Sandy Chisholm take second place on nett 61, ahead of John Davidson, Donald Bain and Carol Paterson on countback after birdies at the seventh, 16th and 18th also helped them to a score of 61.
This Saturday will see the men competing in the crucial final round of the Winter Eclectic, while on Sunday the women and men will be in Winter League Stableford action.
David Joel was the scratch winner at the North Golf Winter Alliance fixture at Brora on Sunday. The Brora Golf Club member claimed victory by two shots with a 67.
Paul Mackay (Tain) won the category one section on nett 68. Roy Page (Wick) came out on top in category two with a nett 69 (BIH).
Fiona Harper (Wick) won the ladies’ competition with a nett 75 (BIH). Reay’s Lee Malcolm took the nearest-the-pin prize.
