A change in the weather lifted spirits for contenders.

AFTER a month of pretty poor golfing weather, the Thurso seniors were treated to a lovely morning last Tuesday for round five of the EGGS Winter Stableford for the Wallace Trophy.

Ronnie Gray showed his appreciation of the conditions with a tremendous 22-point outward nine with his only dropped point at the short ninth. He dropped a couple of more points on the way in but still had a great total of 42 for the round.

That wasn’t good enough to win, however, as John Morrison scored 21 on each nine to win on countback. Morrison’s win was completed in fine style with a birdie at the 18th.

Willie “W.J.” Shearer was out in 22, dropped points at the 10th and 11th holes, and recovered well for 19 more points on the back nine for third place by a point from George Mitchell.

Mitchell started each nine with a single-point hole and then went on to score 20 points both times.

Out in the first group, Ronald Mackay was the only other player to beat the 36-point mark, by a single point.
