David McCarthy was a clear winner in Caithness Cycling Club’s second 10-mile time trial of the season, and after an absence of four years he showed that he has lost none of his fitness.

In very tough conditions – with a temperature of only 5C and a strong 25 mph northerly wind – his 24 min 15 sec was over two minutes ahead of second-placed Alistair Miller, with Lorna Stanger third.

Riders were blown to the turn, with McCarthy averaging 30 mph, but took around three minutes longer on the return.

Results: 1 David McCarthy, 24 min 15 sec; 2 Alistair Miller, 26.24; 3 Lorna Stanger, 31.38; 4 Gary Angus, 32.07; 5 David Anderson, 32.20; 6 Iain Miller, 35.30; 7 Martine Hughes, 38.46.

Away from racing, club secretary Debbie Simmons has been busy organising her ladies' Breeze group rides. Now in their third year, these are once-a-week rides of about 15 miles, for intermediates. Later this year there will also be rides for beginners.

Debbie has also recently started Scottish Guided Rides for men and women. These currently take the form of early morning, once-a-week “virtual commute” rides and are open to electric bikes.
