Magnus Mackenzie's relatives in Caithness were cheering as he scored a stunning goal in Scotland's opening game in the UEFA Under-17 Championship finals in Israel last night.

Unfortunately for the young Scots it proved to be little more than a consolation effort as they lost 5-1 to Portugal at Lod Municipal Stadium.

Magnus's strike came just after the hour mark when he received a pass from substitute Lennon Miller before cutting in on his right and lashing the ball into the net.

Scotland had trailed 3-0 at the break, and the Portuguese – who have been tipped to win the tournament – went on to add two more.

Magnus was substituted with about 10 minutes remaining

The Scots, under head coach Brian McLaughlin, play their second group match against Denmark on Friday before meeting Sweden on Monday.

Magnus, a left-back, has been part of the Celtic youth set-up for about five years. He turned 17 his month.

He is a grandson of the late Ian and Marjory Mackenzie, of Smith Terrace, Wick.

Dad Scott Mackenzie, from Wick, noted that Magnus had netted with his weaker foot.

Scott, a Glasgow-based architect, said: "It was a tough result against a very good Portuguese side. But I thought Magnus was composed on the ball, tried to push the team forward and took his goal superbly.

"The team needs to stay positive and look forward to Denmark on Friday. There is hard work ahead against two high-quality sides."

All of Scotland's matches are being shown live by the BBC – on iPlayer, the BBC Sport website and via the red button.
