MacLeod storms to victory in first race of year
Andrew “Hamper” MacLeod stormed to victory in Caithness Cycling Club’s weekly 10-mile time trial, clocking an impressive 22 min 34 sec at an average speed of 26.6 mph.
This was his first race of the year but he has clearly lost little of his fitness.
Conditions were very pleasant, at 14C and a 5 mph north wind, but, as the course is predominantly uphill to the turn, the fastest times are with a moderate north-west wind to even the outward and return legs. As a result everyone was behind their season’s best, with Lorna Stanger, at just 12 seconds down, scoring the maximum of six points in the Handicap League.
Times: 1 Andrew MacLeod, 22 min 34 sec; 2 Stuart Swanson (road bike), 25.13; 3 Alistair Miller, 26.09; 4 Lorna Stanger, 27.23; 5 Gary Angus, 27.49; 6 Alasdair Washington, 28.58; 7 Phil Cartwright (road bike), 30.56; 8 Martine Hughes (road bike), 33.50.
Competition in the Handicap League gets tighter by the week and, with only five weeks remaining, just 2.5 points separate the top four riders. Alistair Miller leads with 38.5 points, from Roger Broughton (38), Stuart Swanson (37) and Gary Angus (36).
On probably the best night so far this season for Wick Wheelers’ weekly 10-mile time trial, three riders broke their personal best times and two more achieved their season’s best.
Danny Miller clipped one second off his PB (set over two years ago), Stuart Swanson took 13 seconds off and Derek Fraser reduced his best by 12 seconds.
Lisa Coghill and Charlie Mackay had their best times this season.
Times: 1 Danny Miller, 23 min 05 sec (PB); 2 Stuart Swanson, 25.00 (PB); 3 Derek Fraser, 26.12 (PB); 4 James Munro, 28.17; 5 Charlie Mackay, 28.44 (SB); 6 George Ewing, 28.57; 7 Lisa Coghill, 30.34 (SB).
