The 16th annual Mackay Golf Challenge took place at Wick Golf Club on Sunday, May 5, with family members from as far away as Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dingwall joining locals to commemorate Keiss butcher brothers John and Bill Mackay and their sister Kathleen Green.

The competition was close with treacherous wet and windy weather adding to the challenge of the course, which was in very good condition. It was a tussle of former champions for the John T Mackay Cup with early clubhouse leader Sanders Harper being matched on a Stableford score of 29 by Ronald Mackay, who took the lead with a more impressive back nine. However, both were outgunned by Aly Mackay, Wick, who was out in the last three-ball and carded an impressive 31.

The Bill Mackay Trophy for most points on the par threes saw a similarly tight contest with five players on eight points. But the trophy went to Andrew Mackay, Keiss, with nine points, securing his first trophy in the competition’s history.

The Kathleen Green Trophy for juniors went to John T Mackay, Keiss, for the older section, while Lucie Green, Kirkliston, retained her younger section title, both doing impressively in the poor conditions.

Nearest to the pin went to Sandy Mackay, Wick, for a great tee shot on the 11th, while a wind-assisted monster drive on the 17th by James Green, Kirkliston, took the longest drive accolade.

The trophy presentation took place in the evening at a family dinner at Wick's Norseman Hotel where more than 60 attended. John Mackay’s widow Irene and Bill Mackay’s widow Margaret presented the trophies.
