Lybster looking to pull off one of their biggest ever shocks against Pentland United
MANAGER Cameron Mackenzie says it would arguably be the biggest result in Lybster’s history if they can beat Pentland United in the Highland Amateur Cup third round on Saturday.
The two teams are set to face off in a Caithness derby in Dunnet for a place in the quarter-finals.
Lybster suffered a 10-0 hammering to Pentland United earlier in the campaign in the Caithness First Division, but are holding their own since winning promotion to the top flight, as they find themselves in sixth place.
Lybster recorded an impressive win in the second round when they defeated Shetland outfit Lerwick Thistle 5-4.
Mackenzie knows Pentland United will be a step up in level on Saturday and says they will be looking to go out and cause a huge upset at Ham Park.
“All we need to do is learn our lessons and mistakes from previous games,” he said.
“This is a big game for us, if we can get a result there, it will possibly be one of the biggest results in our history.
“Pentland United are probably the most prestigious club in the Highland Amateur Cup. They are flying at the top of the league and threatening to run away with it.
“It will be a tough game, but it will be a good one. All we can do is to try and play our game and go and win it.
“We will do everything we can to go and cause an upset.”
Pentland United boss Michael Gray says his team are expecting a much tougher prospect from Lybster than the 10-0 win earlier last month.
However, he says the Highland Amateur Cup is a competition they think they have a chance of winning as they are the record holders with eight previous cup triumphs.
“We know that Lybster will prove to be a stiff challenge for us on Saturday,” he said.
“Cameron Mackenzie has got his team really well organised, they have had good performances this season, especially beating Lerwick Thistle.
“Our team will be taking nothing for granted, if we are not at it, they have the players in their armoury to hurt us.
“They have experienced players like Bobby Gunn and Gary Weir, we can’t take them lightly.
“Our 10-0 win against them was a bit of a freak result, we are not reading anything into that as Saturday will be a different game and they will be looking to hurt us and much as we will try to hurt them.”
