Local rider Linda Ramsøy is soaring to success in the Scottish showjumping world after qualifying to take part in the amateur championships at Aintree.

Linda, of Mid Clyth, earned her place at the Liverpool venue after coming first in the 85cm final Dodson & Horrell National Amateur second rounds held at the Cabin Equestrian Centre, Inverurie, at the end of October.

Riding her own nine-year-old,16.2hh bay KWPN registered mare Hinkelien, known by her stable name Heidi, she put in some impressive turns in the jump off to secure the fastest time and pick up her qualifying ticket. They also put in a double clear in the first round qualifier class that day too.

Sadly this year she was unable to make the trip down to take part in the Dodson & Horrell National Amateur & Veteran Championships 2021, which ran from November 9-14.

Linda explained that in order to pick up a ticket to the championships riders have to get five double clears within their height class at the shows they visit. They also have the chance to qualify by going through to the second rounds which are higher.

She said that she had previously had a double clear at Tillyoch Equestrian, Peterculter, which meant she got through to the second round in which she was the runner-up. "I went to the Cabin two weeks later and that was the one I won," said Linda. "I hadn't realised I had qualified – I was quite surprised."

She only registered with British Showjumping (BS) a couple of years ago and due to Covid-19 restrictions has not been able to go to many shows. Along with her daughter Sophia, also a keen showjumper, she tries to head south once a month to take part in BS events and is enjoying her trips away in the lorry.

Linda, who is a lecturer in health, social care and childcare with the UHI at Thurso, is already planning next season's campaign on the Scottish circuit when she hopes to qualify again. "I would like to go – I think it would be good fun," she said. "Next year I will be trying to get my five double clears."

Sophia is competing a couple of horses at the moment and would also like to qualify for the amateur championships – she has enjoyed a win in the discovery class on Elsa and the partnership have successfully embarked in the 110cm newcomers as well. She is working towards gaining double clears at her class height levels so mum and daughter can make the trip to Aintree together next year.
