TWO stalwarts of the local darts scene were remembered in the second week of action in the new Wick and District Darts League season.

The venue was the Seaforth Highlanders’ Club with the Alice Coghill Memorial Trophy (ladies' singles) and the Colin Perry Memorial Cup (men's pairs) being contested.

Alice was a member of the best ladies’ team ever seen in the league, the all-conquering Francis Street Club, along with Carol Sutherland, Sharon Swanson, Laura O’Brien, Sharon Mackay and the late Karen Burke.

Freda Perry had good wins on her way to the final, beating Maggie Sutherland 2-0, Julie Harper 3-0 and Alison Tait 3-1.

Last week’s runner-up Kara Sutherland was desperately seeking to make amends.

Kara saw off Ann Wells (2-0), Maggie Riley (3-0) and Janet Banks (3-0) in the semi-final.

The final was a close affair but it was young Kara, a Scottish international youth player, who took a 3-2 victory.

Highest scorer on the night was Kara Sutherland (Queen’s) with 140 x 4, 135, 134 and 100 x 2.

In the men’s event Kevin Donald and Jocky Plowman (Queen’s) edged out the Harper’s pair of David Taylor and Alan Nicolson in the final.

It was the third consecutive year Kevin had won this event.

Cath Begg, one of the stalwarts of the ladies' darts scene in Caithness, is retiring from the game and has received a lifetime award from the Wick and District Darts League. Cath, from Keiss, began playing for her village pub team around 26 years ago, moving on about 15 years later to the Smiddy Inn for a few seasons and then to the Crown Bar team which she has represented until her newly announced retiral. The presentation was made by Scott Crowden. Picture: Robert MacDonald / Northern Studios
