Juniors show their class at end-of-season Reay competition
A good entry turned out to play in the Reay Junior Open to mark the end of the summer season, with 48 taking part from Reay, Thurso and Wick golf clubs.
It was a busy weekend with many juniors playing in the Wick Junior Open the previous day as well.
In the 18-hole competition from the white medal tees, Arran Johnson (Reay) won the scratch prize for a third consecutive year with a fantastic gross score of 75.
In the handicap section, Dylan Mackenzie (Reay) was successful in taking home the prize for a second consecutive year.
While there were no entries from the red tees this year, there was a much bigger entry than usual from the blue tees with Ethan Mackenzie (Reay) taking home the scratch trophy with an excellent gross score of 87.
Charles Fryett (Reay) took home the handicap trophy with a net score of 73, closely followed one shot back on 74 by Lee Bain (Thurso). In third place was Jay Kirkwood (Thurso).
Lots more competitors completed either six holes or three holes on the main course. Competition was particularly tough in the six-hole with a large entry.
In the girls’ section, Skye Foubister (Thurso) finished on an excellent 40 to take home the trophy. Ella Munro (Reay) scored 42 to take second place with Rachel Macgregor (Reay) in third.
In the boys’ competition, Liam Gunn (Wick) took the prize with a fantastic score of 29. Michael Smith (Reay) came in scond with 34, which included a birdie on the par-three fifth hole. Kieran Wilson took home the bronze medal.
Morven Munro (Reay) triumphed in the three-hole girls’ competition with a great score of 22. Runner-up was Sadie Smith (Reay) on 30 and Hannah Munro (Reay) took third place.
The three-hole boys’ competition was won by Kyle Chalmers (Wick) with a fine score of 26. Charlie Macadie (Wick) took second place, one shot back on 27, and Ruairidh Macdonald came in third for the bronze medal with 29.
Some of the newer or younger players played their competition on the junior three-hole course. Isla Macdonald (Reay) came in first with a fantastic 24. Iona Munro (Reay) won the silver medal and Ailsa Macdonald took home the bronze.
The prizes were presented by club member and junior volunteer coach Graeme Fryett, who was also representing one of the competition sponsors Eurest which provided the food for the event along with drinks for the children to take out on the course.
As a result of sponsorship from JA Mackay for the main prize vouchers, the club was able to use the entry fees to make sure that every player went home with a prize. Thanks were given to all the volunteers who helped to run the event and to the coaches and volunteers for their help throughout the season.
The Reay junior section is now finished for this season but will be back in the spring. Anyone interested in finding out how to get involved can get in touch with junior convener Lora Jane Kelly at reaygolfjuniors@gmail.com
