WICK Golf Club’s winter competitions started on Sunday with a Stableford played from the front tees. Over 30 members entered the competition.

The course is in good condition for the time of year despite the very wet autumn and early starters had the best of the conditions as the south-westerly wind grew in strength as the day wore on making the last nine holes play their full length.

Leading the way with 39 points, which equates to a nett score of 66, was Ian Coghill (9), an excellent score in the conditions. Despite starting with a bogey Coghill covered the first nine holes in one-under-par 34, a magnificent effort, which included birdies at the third and sixth to amass 23 points.

Unfortunately he only scored a point following sixes at the 10th and 11th but he recovered well to score 15 over the last seven holes.

Second with 37 points was Mike Morrice (14). He played some blistering golf on the front nine, scoring 22 points, with no fewer than five nett birdies. He then played well to score 10 points from the 10th to 13th holes and must have had visions of winning the competition. But, disappointingly, he could only score five points over the last five holes.

Veteran Rob Sutherland’s (16) revival continued following his win at the previous week’s competition and he took third spot with 36 points. Sutherland played fine golf to score 20 points over the first nine holes, which included a nett eagle at the sixth, but had a no score at the seventh.

Like nearly every other competitor he found the going difficult into the wind, scoring 16 points with a no-score at the 14th hole.

Alan Shearer (16) was fourth with 35 points. He was the exception to the rule as he struggled downwind scoring only 16 points on the way out but played some exceptional golf to score 19 points on the back nine, the best score of the day, which included a nett eagle on the 16th.

Other scores worthy of note came from Farquhar MacGregor (15) and David Nicolson (4) both scoring 34 points.

The annual prize-giving is being held at the clubhouse tomorrow night starting at about 7.30pm with live music and a snack buffet.

The winter medal competitions get under way on Sunday and will be played from the yellow tees.
