Hundredth year of winter rifle league sees 29 teams competing for honours





Caithness Small Bore Rifle Association’s postal winter league programme, now in its 100th year, has completed its first four rounds.

Twenty-nine teams, nine of which are outwith Caithness, are competing for honours in the five senior divisions and six shooters are vying for the silverware in the junior (under-18) individual league.

Results: Division One (points dropped ex 400) – Round one: Wick Old Stagers “A” 11, Watten “A” 11; Halkirk “A” 10, Pentland “A” 15; Huntly “A” 16, Bogey 10. Round two: Wick OS “A” 11, Pentland “A” 10; Halkirk “A” 13, Huntly “A” 6; Watten “A” 16, Bogey 10.

Round three: Wick OS “A” 6, Huntly “A” 10; Halkirk “A” 4, Bogey 10; Pentland “A” 9, Watten “A” 16. Round four: Wick OS “A” 8, Halkirk “A” 10; Huntly “A” 9, Watten “A” 12; Pentland “A” 6, Bogey 10.

H Simpson (Wick OS “A”), L Thompson (Huntly “A”), R Campbell, W Campbell (Halkirk “A”) and P Richard (Pentland “A”) were the only competitors to return possibles.

Division Two – Round one: Stirkoke “A” 19, Westfield “A” 15; Orkney 400, Halkirk “B” 13; Watten “B” 24, Wick OS “B” 14. Round two: Stirkoke “A” 14, Halkirk “B” 19; Orkney 400, Watten “B” 17; Westfield “A” 17, Wick OS “B” 27.

Round three: Stirkoke “A” 17, Watten “B” 19; Orkney 400, Wick OS “B” 27; Westfield “A” 16, Halkirk “B” 16. Round four: Stirkoke “A” 22, Orkney 400; Watten “B” 12, Westfield “A” 10; Wick OS “B” 15, Halkirk “B” 18.

M Mackay, M Mackenzie (Westfield “A”) and J M Sutherland (Stirkoke “A”) were the only competitors to return possibles.

Division Three – Round one: Huntly “B” 22, Dallas 20; Pentland “B” 17, Lairg 24; Dingwall 28, Stirkoke “B” 17. Round two: Stirkoke “B” 120, Dallas 28; Dingwall 14, Pentland “B” 18; Lairg 27, Huntly “B” 12.

Round three: Huntly “B” 12, Dingwall 23; Lairg 23, Dallas 8; Stirkoke “B” 125, Pentland “B” 20. Round four: Pentland “B” 23, Huntly “B” 19; Stirkoke “B” 117, Lairg 27; Dallas 14, Dingwall 18.

K Sutherland (Dallas) was the only competitor to return a possible.

Division Four – Round one: Keiss 18, Stirkoke “C” 128; Halkirk “C” 214, Clach 40; Wick OS “C” 31, Watten “C” 26. Round two: Keiss 16, Wick OS “C” 32; Watten “C” 26, Halkirk “C” 211; Stirkoke “C” 135, Clach 34.

Round three: Keiss 17, Halkirk “C” 122; Watten “C” 25, Clach 49; Stirkoke “C” 123, Wick OS “C” 35. Round four: Keiss 20, Watten “C” 34; Halkirk “C” 114, Stirkoke “C” 35; Wick OS “C” 38, Clach 32.

G Robertson (Stirkoke “C”) was the only competitor to return a possible.

Division Five – Round one: Pentland “C” 381, Westfield “B” 69; Huntly “C” 36, Nairn 66; Stirkoke “D” 314, Watten “D” 307. Round two: Pentland “C” 400, Nairn 73; Huntly “C” 31, Stirkoke “D” 314; Westfield “B” 62, Watten “D” 308.

Round three: Pentland “C” 400, Stirkoke “D” 260; Huntly “C” 49, Watten “D” 312; Nairn 69, Westfield “B” 49. Round four: Pentland “C” 400, Huntly “C” 33; Stirkoke “D” 310, Westfield “B” 38; Nairn 82, Watten “D” 313.

Junior individual league – Round one: J Bremner 5, J Singh 15; G Campbell 6, J Macadie 26; A Mackay 33, E Swanson 81. Round two: J Bremner 8, J Macadie 26; G Campbell 9, A Mackay 27; J Singh 15, E Swanson (withdrawn). Round three: J Bremner 8, A Mackay 22; G Campbell 11, E Swanson (withdrawn); J Macadie 30, J Singh 10.

The BSA Challenge Cup competition is open to teams that are representative of county associations in the United Kingdom affiliated to the NSRA (National Small-bore Rifle Association) and of provinces and states of the Commonwealth.

The BSA Cup match is shot annually by teams of 12 shooters. This year the county team was pipped into second place by the narrowest of margins.

Caithness secured the Alexander Challenge Trophy as the top-scoring Scottish county.
