Round five of Thurso Golf Club’s summer league was played last Thursday and Adam Higgins was the winner with 43 points.

Higgins (20) was out in five over par and was playing solid golf. The back scoring was not as good but was still enough to win first prize.

Gavin Souter (14), playing with a new driver, is hitting the ball as well as he has ever done off the tee. Halves of three over par and four over par saw him also finish on 43 points, but it could have been bigger as he bogeyed the last three holes.

This was one better than Jocky Begg (13) who had the same gross score as Souter after going out in three over par and back in four over. Begg was helped with birdies at the second, seventh and 12th.

Graeme Henderson (7) also had three birdies, at the seventh, 13th and 15th, as he returned 38 points.

Jim Sangster (4) had birdies at the 15th and 17th as he also returned 38 points. Andrew Main (9) birdied the sixth as he too retuned 38 points.

Iain Dunnett had birdies at the 13th and 15th but he surpassed this with an eagle at the 18th, as he chipped in from 40 yards after hitting a three wood off the tee. This gave him 37 points along with Cameron Reid (21) and Ronald Mackay (14) who had a birdie at the ninth.

Steve Spargo (8), Jack Johnston (20) and Sid Campbell (13) all returned 36 points.

Callum Mauchlen was the winner of the William Simpson memorial on Saturday with 85 (19) 66. Despite two eights on his card at the fourth and 10th, a birdie at the ninth helped him to his win by a shot from Warren Gordon.

Gordon birdied the eighth and 13th and the lowest gross of the day with a 73 after returning home in two over par.

Ed Wyllie also had two birdies, at the 12th and 13th, as he recorded 75 (8) 67. Dean MacDonald returned in five over to record 81 (13) 68, along with Cameron Reid, George Munro and Adam Higgins who both had nett 68s.

On Sunday it was round six of the summer league and some familiar names were at the top.

Dean McDonald (13) could be one to watch this year and this was the case as he returned 40 points. This was after a no-score at the first, but he rectified this with birdies at the seventh and 17th.

Steven Osbourne (13) birdied the 18th to return 39 points, one ahead of Tyler Gordon.

Willie Lipka (21), Jim Sangster (3), Alan Swanson (2), Angus Cameron (11), Cameron Reid (20) and Steven Lowe (14) all had 36 points.
