CAITHNESS rugby player Shaun Gunn has taken another big step in his development after being selected for the Scotland squad for the forthcoming Six Nations under-20s championship.

The Edinburgh-based student from Gerston has made a big impact since moving to the capital two years ago. After having been given a taste of senior rugby with the Greens in the BT Caley 1 League, he quickly adapted to playing for National 1 side Edinburgh Accies and has this year been training with the Edinburgh Pro 14 squad.

Gunn graduated through the ranks of the Greens’ youth set up and played for the Caithness Orkney under-18 side which lifted the Scottish Youth Bowl at Murrayfield.

He has become a firm favourite with the Raeburn Place outfit since moving to the city, winning several club awards and becoming a fixture in the first XV’s front row,

The prop, who recently scored a hat-trick of tries for Accies, is also a Scottish Rugby Academy player.

The Caley under-20 player won his first junior cap last year when he played for Scotland’s Development under-19s in their narrow defeat by Georgia.

He is now focused on the round of under-20s internationals, having won a place in the squad. Their first outing is at Colwyn Bay’s Parc Eirias when they face Wales on Friday, February 2 before hosting France and England. They then face away clashes with Ireland and Italy.

Gunn is currently back with his family and watched Tuesday’s Sinclair Cadzow Memorial Cup match between Caithness an the Exiles.
