Five-star display by Caithness United ahead of U14 Scottish Cup trip
A hat-trick by Ross Mackay and a double from Ruaridh Kean gave Caithness United under-14s a 5-0 victory over Invergordon at Naver on Sunday.
Caithness coach Murray Coghill was pleased to see chances being taken and also praised the defensive players as the team returned to action after a two-week break.
“We were very pleased with what we witnessed against a physically imposing Invergordon side,” Coghill said.
“In the previous couple of games we hadn’t been clinical enough in front of goal, so it was something we focused on at training. Although our conversion rate perhaps wasn’t what it should have been, the outcome was five very well-taken goals.
“There were occasions when we seemed to play very central, but during the final 30 minutes we were much better in terms of using the full width of the pitch and moving the opposition around to create gaps.
“A clean sheet is also very pleasing for the defensive players, who showed good shape in and out of possession throughout the 90 minutes.”
Meanwhile, Caithness United are gearing up for a delayed entry to the U14 Scottish Cup.
Coghill said: “After receiving a bye in round one and a walkover in round two, we will finally get our Scottish Cup campaign under way as we travel to play Ellon Meadows on Sunday, November 3.
“This is the first time the club has entered the competition and, although it’s going to be a lengthy journey, representing Caithness in a national competition is an experience the players and coaches are all looking forward to.
“Taking on new opposition from further afield will be a good test for the team and regardless of the outcome it will be an experience that will serve them well in their footballing journey.”
