Fitness ‘really shone through’ in fourth straight victory for Yellows
Skipper Tom Storey praised the Yellows’ fitness levels after they completed a Caledonia North 3 back-to-back double over Dyce.
They followed up their 75-12 win at Millbank the previous week with a near-replica 73-17 success on Saturday at Central Park in the north-west of Aberdeen.
Their fourth straight win leaves them fourth in the division, nine points behind leaders Turriff but having played two games fewer.
With the visitors short of bodies, Dyce returned the favour shown to them in Thurso in agreeing to a 12-a-side match.
Caithness led by four converted tries without reply in an opening 40 minutes when they repelled several prolonged assaults on their try line.
Storey feared his side’s energy and intensity levels might drop, especially as Dyce were able to refresh their line-up.
But they kept their collective shoulder to the wheel, with their mix of grit and wit seeing them run in a further six tries against three conceded.
Second-row Storey said: “I think Dyce thought they could turn it around but the game remained open, which suited us, and we continued to break tackles and get passes and offloads away in contact and run around them.
“I think the boys’ fitness really shone through. We wore them down and you could see their heads dropping and them falling off tackles the longer the game went on.”
Caithness try-scorers were Scott Mackay (3), Shane Campbell (3), Kyle Macleod (2), Colin Gemmill and Will Oag.
Fly-half Jamie Mowat had another vintage day off the tee, converting all 10 tries as well as landing a penalty.
Storey was keen to highlight the performances of two of the youngest members of the team, scrum-half Oag and hooker-cum-winger Connor Allan.
“Will showed real tenacity and fitness around the park,” Storey said. “He makes good breaks, links well and knows the tempo we want to play at.
“Connor has also really stepped and had another cracking game for us.”
Macleod was forced off midway through the second half with an ankle knock.
He has time to recover for the Yellows’ next game, a double-header at home to Huntly, on April 5.
