The last four championship finals were decided at Thurso Bowling Club last week with the ladies’ pairs, the gents’ pairs, triples and beginners’ singles all taking place.

The ladies’ pairs was a close affair early on with Lynne Swanson and Marina Bain holding a two-shot lead over Julie Knapp and Janet Sinclair after nine ends, but Lynne and Marina stretched the lead over the next five ends to run out winners by 26-8.

Gents’ triples finalists Iain Elder, Charlie Smith, John McGill, Alan Morrison, Ronnie Bain snr and Henny Henderson.

The gents’ triple of Henny Henderson, Alan Morrison and Ronnie Bain snr were on top form against Iain Elder, Charlie Smith and John McGill and took command of the game from the off, building a 20-3 deficit after 11 ends and eventually securing a 21-8 victory.

The men’s pairs looked like following the same pattern when Douglas Fraser and Brian Cormack held a 12-1 lead over Colin Floydd and Alec MacKay but as it turned out this produced the finish of the night as Colin and Alec staged a remarkable comeback to lead 17-15 going into the last end.

Alas it was not to be for Colin and Alec as Douglas and Brian claimed the title when Brian drew third shot with the very last delivery to clinch the tie 18-17.

The men’s beginners’ singles was a game of high calibre when David Kemp and Clair Robertson battled for the trophy. David started the better and led 11-4 after 10 ends but Clair gradually played his way into the game and after 23 ends finally overcame David to lift the title by 21 shots to 15.

The Thurso ladies’ Top Ten team returned from the national finals in Ayr defeated but upbeat. The semi-final draw was not in Thurso’s favour when it pitted them against the strong favourites, the Allsorts from the west district, a team that was littered with current internationals and Scottish champions. Thurso lost out 8-0 in the end but can hold their heads high as it was a great achievement to win the bronze medal, especially as they were the only team to consist of 10 players from the same club.

Earlier in the week Ross Cowan and Scott Christie won the pairs sets title.
