TWO Rangers heroes from the past were the special guests at a fundraising function held by Thurso Swifts at the weekend.

Former Scotland midfielder Ian Durrant and Spanish striker Nacho Novo shared some of their football experiences, answered questions and mingled with fans at the sell-out sportsman’s dinner in the Park Hotel on Saturday.

It raised hundreds of pounds for charity with some money also going towards Swifts, who play in the first division of the county league.

The event was organised by a committee from Swifts along with Alyn Gunn, with Sandy Gordon stepping in at short notice to act as compere.

Ian and Nacho were really accommodating and had some good stories to tell.

Swifts manager Nigel Mackenzie said it had been a fantastic night.

“We had one last year with Barry Ferguson and Lee McCulloch which was successful,” Nigel said. “We managed to get an opportunity to do it again with Nacho and Ian and we decided to go for it.

“It was a good night last year, and this year surpassed it.

“We raise some money for charity and it’s a good way to raise a bit of funds for the club as well, to keep the club afloat. It’s more about that than anything else.

“We try to make it a great experience for those coming, and if we can make a little bit for the club and a little bit for charity we’re quite happy.

“Ian and Nacho were really accommodating. They were good talkers and they had some good stories to tell, so it went very smoothly.

“Everyone enjoyed listening to what they had to say, and there were a few questions and answers. It was a cracking night.”

Cheques for £200 each were presented to Befrienders Highland and Macmillan Cancer Support.
