The gents' Winter Eclectic competition reached an exciting climax on Saturday with the sixth and final round played over the Reay links.

The format sees the best scores at each hole over the six rounds used to calculate an eclectic score, and at the start of the day three players – Steve Efemey, Andy Bain and Lee Parnell – were tied at the top of the leaderboard on nett 62, with the chasing pack led by Wayne Mowat on 64.

Efemey posted the best score of the day, an excellent round of 75 for nett 66, with birdies at the 14th and 17th holes helping him to the win.

Kenny Farmer Snr took second place on nett 67 after a solid round of 86, made up of halves of 41 and 45, while David Mackay birdied the ninth on his way to a round of 81 for nett 68 and third place.

A trio of players – Lee Malcolm, Fred Groves and Bruce Mackay – finished tied fourth on nett 70.

Despite Efemey’s fine performance on the day, he was unable to improve his eclectic score and finished on 62. That left the way clear for Bain and Parnell to battle it out.

Bain managed a birdie at the ninth and improved his overall score by two shots to finish on 60, but it was eclectic specialist Parnell who once again prevailed after a hat-trick of birdies at the second, fifth and sixth helped him to reach a winning eclectic score of 59. Wayne Mowat, Gavin Gunn, and John O’Brien all finished on a score of 64 to share fourth place in the overall standings.

The Reay ladies were competing in the sixth round of their Winter Stableford competition, and it was Tricia Macdonald who prevailed with a fine score of 32 points which included a birdie at the par-five sixth hole.

Eileen Manson put in a solid performance to take second place on 31 points, one point ahead of Carol Paterson who finished third on 30. Pam Bain and Alison Ross finished in joint fourth place after both scored 29 points.

The latest round of the Senior Stableford competition was a high-scoring affair with Malcolm Thomson finishing top of the standings with an excellent haul of 40 points which included a brace of birdies, at the ninth and 14th.

A steady round from Billy Moore was good enough for 38 points and second place, with Jack Johnstone managing birdies at the ninth and 15th on his way to 37 points and third place. Willie Steven took fourth place on 35, with Murdo Macdonald finishing in fifth on 33.

This weekend will see the gents competing in the Winter League Stableford competition.
