WORLD Mountain Running Series champion Andrew Douglas just missed out on a place on the podium at the European Mountain Running Championships in Italy.

The Halkirk athlete crossed the line in fourth place at the championships in Arco, Italy in a time of 54 minutes 32 seconds.

The Italians were expected to be favourites on home terrain and so it proved as Martin Dematteis won the title in a time of 53 minutes 33 seconds beating his twin brother and former European champion Bernard by one second.

Ahmet Arslan of Turkey finished third in a time of 54 minutes nine seconds.

Douglas did go home with a medal after Great Britain finished third in the team standings.
