THERE was a great turnout at the Francis Street Club when teams battled in the Wick and District Darts League’s first tournament.

Fifty-eight players took part in the Willie Keith and Karen Burke memorial cups.

Contenders included both freshly crowned county champions, Malcolm Begg and Ann Wells, and the county pairs holders, Willie Crowe and Lee Kerr, from Lybster.

There were some ding-dong battles and awesome darts, such as George Smith putting Rab Edwards in the spectators’ area, winning in 16, 17 and 20 darts.

It was sisters Carol Sutherland and Sharon Swanson, both of FSC, in the first semi-final with the latter edging it and county champion Wells seeing off a spirited display by Camps player Loretta Harper.

The final was a tighter affair than the scoreline of 3-0 suggests, giving Wells, of Camps “2”, a memorable double in the space of four days, securing the Karen Burke Memorial Cup.

The men’s first semi saw the Smiddy Inn stalwart David Miller’s hopes fade as Stewart Tait progressed in his usual workmanlike display.

The second was a real cracker with Kevin MacGregor, Seaview’s number one, seeing off a courageous display by Camps number one, Smith.

The final was a more closely contended affair with Tait having an opportunity in two of the legs – but MacGregor wasn’t giving any second chances as he lifted the Willie Keith Memorial Cup.
