A THURSO football team set up by Rangers fans claimed a little bit more space in their favourite club’s trophy cabinet on Saturday.

Sevens side Thurso Rangers donated the annual Davie Cooper Memorial Cup to its heroes at Ibrox when manager Alyn Gunn (26) attended the St Mirren game.

The trophy is now in pride of place in the Davie Cooper suite along with the brace of cups already donated by the local side.

“When we were doing the cup competition back in July they helped us out by providing a signed ball,” said Gunn. “We made an agreement back then that we would donate the trophy to the club and they were more than happy to accept it for the Davie Cooper Suite.”

“It was a really good day – apart from the result.”

Despite the 1-1 draw, Gunn was cheered up by getting to speak to manager Ally McCoist, as well as Gers fan favourite Paul Gascoigne.

Gunn met previous manager Walter Smith, ex-player Sandy Jardine and former chief executive Martin Bain when he handed over two of the previous Davie Cooper cups last year.

The local team got together five years ago and played for two seasons in an amateur sevens league on the all-weather pitch in Thurso.

After securing sponsors the players decided to put on the annual cup competition in memory of one of the most respected players in Rangers’ history – left-winger Cooper, who died in 1995 of a brain haemorrhage.

The amateur squad won the cup again this year, beating Thurso Spartans 6-3.

Last month Thurso Rangers featured in the Rangers FC monthly magazine for their role in keeping alive the memory of one of the Blues’ most respected players.
