Crucial birdie at final hole seals victory for Williamson

A busy week on the course at Reay saw action in the women’s, men’s and senior sections.

Round three of the men’s Winter Eclectic was a low-scoring affair, with Willie Williamson and Ali Simpson tied at the top of the leaderboard on nett 64. In the final analysis a crucial birdie at the final hole saw Williamson take the win on countback following a fine round of 88.

Simpson shot matching halves of 45 in his round of 90 for second place.

Andy Bain fired excellent birdies at the eighth and 14th on his way to a round of 75 for nett 65 and third place. Next best were Malcolm Thomson and Pete McCartney, who both finished on nett 69.

In the overall standings, Steve Efemey leads the way on an eclectic score of 62, one ahead of Andy Bain and Lee Parnell on 63.

There was some spectacular scoring in the latest round of the Winter League Stableford competition with a steady round from Helen Gisbey helping her to victory on 46 points. A birdie at the 14th saw David Gisbey take second place on 39, a point ahead of Jack Johnstone who finished in third place on 38.

In the overall standings, Jack Johnstone leads the way on a six-round aggregate score of 218, ahead of Ronald Matheson on 209, and James Meiklejohn and Stuart Greig who are both on 202.

There was also some excellent scoring in round four of the women’s Winter Stableford with Pam Garbe taking victory with a fine tally of 44 points.

The in-from Helen Gisbey finished in second place on 39 points, with Jane Mackenzie third on 37. Jacqui Greig was next best on 35, with club captain Carol Paterson fifth on 34.

In the latest round of the North Point Distillery Senior Stableford competition a birdie at the sixth helped Mikey Ross to victory on a fine score of 38 points.

Matching halves of 42 saw Kenny Farmer Snr finish second on 37, with David Mackay third a further two points back on 35 points.

In the overall Stableford standings Malcolm Thomson leads the way on a six-round aggregate score of 218, with Fred Groves and Alex Anderson his nearest challengers on 210.

In the Eclectic competition, Alex Anderson and Stuart Greig are tied on a score of 63, with four players on 66 chasing the leaders.

This weekend sees the women in Winter Stableford action and the men competing in the Eclectic on Saturday, while on Sunday both the women and men will be competing in the Winter League Stableford.

Bryan Donald came out on top in the latest North Golf Winter Alliance fixture, held at Tain. The Invergordon member took the win in the scratch section by one shot with 68.

David Joel (Brora) came second on 69 with a better inward half from Allan Cameron (Royal Dornoch).

Tain’s Frank Mackie took the category one victory with a nett 67. Neil Macrae (Durness) was second on nett 68 with a better inward half from clubmate Alistair Morrison.

Sanders More (Portmahomack) finished top in category two with a nett 64. Mike Keay (Portmahomack) was second with a nett 65 and Graeme Mackay (Wick) third on nett 66.

Laura Durrand from Thurso won the ladies’ section with a nett 68 and a better inward half from Maggie Jamieson (Golspie). Thurso’s Lyndsay Stott was third on nett 72 (BIH).

Neil Macrae took the nearest-the-pin prize.

The next Alliance fixture is at Portmahomack on February 23.
