The William Simpson memorial was played on Saturday at Thurso Golf Club and the early starters got the best of the weather.

Donald Bain (handicap 18) had six pars on the front nine as he reached the turn in four over par.

His back nine showed the same scoring, until the 17th where he carded a seven. Back home in 42 saw him return a nett 63 and he was a comfortable winner.

Ronald Reid (24) had a birdie at the 18th to show why he is the favourite for the tour cup, recording an excellent nett 66.

Jack Fidler (11) birdied the second as he returned a nett 67, one ahead of Andrew Main (8), Jimmy Florence (20), Alan Coghill (12), Allan Mackenzie (23), Chris Sinclair (22) and Paul Foulkes (33). Stephen King (14) and Ross Williamson (21) had nett 69s.

Round five of the A&A Mackay Builders Summer League was played on Sunday in conditions more akin to summer and scoring was low. Ben Durrand (23) reached the turn in seven over par after some solid golf. He continued this on the back nine to return 45 points and to also record his lowest ever score with an 83.

Gordon Munro (42) had the same number of points as his handicap, helped by a birdie at the 18th, along with Graham Elder (38). Stephen Spargo (9) had birdies at the eighth and 13th and made only one mistake as he showed signs of yesteryear with 41 points.

Stephen Fidler (14) had two birdies at the eighth and ninth as he also returned 41 points. Andrew Lannon (17) birdied the 17th for 38 points along with Ed Wyllie, who birdied two and 14, and Steve Osborne (12), who birdied seven and eight.

Ronald Reid (24) kept his form going with 37 points alongside Alan Swanson (0). Ben Gordon (6) was remarkably on his own with 36 points.

This Saturday sees the May medal/club championship round one, and is by draw only. Sunday's competition is the Bert Brownlee Fourball Open.
