Caithness badminton players Shona Mackay and Chloe Mackenzie travelled to Edinburgh to take part in the Yonex East of Scotland championships 2025.

The A-graded senior sanctioned tournament was held in the city’s Jack Kane Sports Centre.

Chloe, from Barrock, played Qing Yang Xiao (Lothian) in the round of 16 in the singles. Chloe lost 25-23, 21-11, placing her in the consolation event where in the quarter-finals she was up against Orkney’s Jody Groundwater.

In the level doubles Shona, from Dunnet, and partner Shannon Leslie (Orkney) played Chloe and partner Anshita Jaiswal (Glasgow and North Strathclyde). This game did not disappoint, going the full three sets.

The first set went to Shona and Shannon by 21-18, then Chloe and Anshita edged the second 21-19 before Shona and Shannon took the third 21-17.

That put them into the quarter-finals where they met top seeds Ishbel McCallister and Brooke Stalker. The seeded pair took the first set 21-18 but Shona and Shannon edged the second 21-19, so it was all the play for in the third set, with Ishbel and Brooke winning it 21-9.

Chloe and Anshita went into the consolation event where they played Megan Munro and Anna Richardson in the semis. Chloe and Anshita won it 21-12 and went on to beat Valerie Bui and Revathy Latheesh 21-15 in the final.

Shona paired up with Shetland Island Games team-mate Thomas Calder for the mixed. They played Blair Tait and Deepti Vijayakumar in the round of 32 and they had a tough first match, losing 21-17, 21-11.

That placed them in the consolation event where in the round of 16 they took on Adam Li and Shona Brown, with Shona and Thomas progressing 21-9.

In the quarter-finals they lost 21-19 to Luke Parkinson and Ingrid Wang after a good contest.
