Caithness United may not have been at their best in their latest U16 Highland League encounter but they did enough to come away with three points from a 2-0 victory over Dingwall at Harmsworth Park.

The Ross-shire boys were feeling buoyant after a 6-0 victory over Inverness Athletic the previous weekend.

Caithness made the breakthrough on the half-hour mark after Cameron Watt slipped his team-mate Max Ross in behind Dingwall’s back line. Ross held off his marker and produced a neat finish.

A stunning strike by Ryan More just before half-time saw Caithness double their lead. He latched onto the ball just inside the Dingwall half, drove towards the penalty box and cut inside past a defender before unleashing an unstoppable strike with his right foot.

Caithness made a couple of changes for the second half, which proved to be a dogged affair. Dingwall did manage to create a couple of half-chances but Kyle Bain was resolute in goal for Caithness again.

Caithness came close to extending their lead on a number of occasions, with goalmouth scrambles, clearances off the line and also when striker Liam Semple hit the woodwork.

Caithness coach Kevin Miller said: “It definitely wasn’t our best performance of the season, as we saw a lot of the ball but seemed to struggle to build the play like I know we can.

“We gave the ball away cheaply far too often and, when we did get in behind their defence, we passed up a number of good opportunities to put the game to bed.

“Having said that, we scored two very good goals, kept a clean sheet and won the three points, so it’s one of those games where you just take the points and move on to the next game.”
