Chloe battles hard in West of Scotland junior U19 championships
Caithness junior badminton player Chloe Mackenzie battled hard in the West of Scotland junior under-19 championships in the Sir Craig Reedie Centre in Glasgow.
The 16-year-old from Barrock had a good first-round game in the girls’ singles against Tsz Ying Lee (Glasgow and North Strathclyde). Chloe played well and took the win by 21-12, 21-18.
She then lost out to Qing Yang Xiao (Lothian) in the quarter-finals 21-10, 21-19.
Chloe paired up with Anshita Jaiswal (Glasgow and North Strathclyde) in the girls’ doubles.
They played a round-robin format with five pairs entered. Chloe and Anshita won two of their four games, then their encounter with Ingrid Wang and Qing Yang Xiao (both Lothian) went the full stretch to three sets. Chloe and Anshita took the first 21-18 but lost the second and third 21-19 and 21-18 respectively.
Then came another three-setter against Gemma Foulis (Orkney) and Lanna Campbell (Lanarkshire). They lost the first 21-14, won the second 21-18 and were beaten 21-17 in the third after a game of phenomenal rallies.
This saw them pick up third place. Ingrid and Qing were the winners, with Gemma and Lanna as runners-up after losing to Ingrid and Qing 21-18, 21-17.
In the mixed doubles Chloe paired up with Callum McWhirter (Elgin). First up they took on the number one seeds Lewis Smith and Lanna Campbell, with Lewis and Lanna winning 21-10, 21-10.
This placed Chloe and Callum into the consolation event where they won their semi-final 15-8, 15-5. They were advised the final wouldn’t be played for at least two-and-half-hours, due to semi-finals and finals of other disciplines, so they agreed to forfeit the game on this occasion seeing as it was a consolation match.
