Caithness United hosted Orkney Youth Development Group over five separate age groups in Wick over the weekend of August 14/15.

On the Saturday the U12s, U13s and U14s all played in the morning on the Bignold pitches and the U15s played in the afternoon at Harmsworth Park.

All the Caithness age groups were successful against their Orcadian counterparts, putting in some excellent individual and team performances, with their coaches very satisfied with what they saw.

The weekend culminated with the U16s playing on the Sunday at Harmsworth Park where they were competing for the Louisburgh United Memorial Cup.

The match was keenly contested and the score was finely balanced at 2-2 with 30 minutes to go. It was then that Caithness changed their shape slightly, allowing them to exploit the wide areas of the pitch and create plenty of goalscoring opportunities.

Caithness were well on top for the remainder of the match and managed to score five more times to run out 7-2 winners.

Scott Durrand led the line brilliantly, scoring an impressive hat-trick, with Rory Taylor getting a double. Sean Pearson and Elliot Cormack added a goal apiece late on.

The trophy was presented to the Caithness captain, Matthew Aitkenhead, by Jimmy Durrand assisted by Alistair Steven and Ken Green.

During the presentation, Caithness United chairman Alan Turner thanked Orkney for travelling over and contributing to a successful weekend of football.

Alan also thanked Wick Academy chairman Pat Miller for giving permission for the older age groups to play on the Harmsworth pitch, and went on to say how good it was to see all the pitches full of youngsters playing competitive football and enjoying themselves.

He added: “All in all this has been an excellent weekend for our club, in preparation for the season ahead.”
