Caithness players among the honours in Highland junior restricted competition

Twenty-five Caithness players took part in the Highland Badminton Group (HBG) annual junior restricted competition at Inverness Leisure.

A total of 69 juniors entered over the three age groups – under-13s, 15s and 19s – from locations across the HBG area, from Orkney and Caithness to Benbecula and Skye, as well as Moray, Sutherland, Ross-shire and Inverness.

The tournament was sponsored by Emerald Playtime.

Caithness players’ results:

U13 – Boys’ singles: Winner – Liam Sinclair; quarter-finals – Jamie Rathie and Finlay Nicolson; consolation winner – Jack Angus; Consolation Stages – Ethan Gulloch, Lewis Steven and Cameron Forbes.

Girls’ singles: Consolation winner – April Steven; consolation runner-up – D’Arcey Taylor; consolation stages – Amy Sutherland.

Boys’ doubles: 1 Liam Sinclair and Finlay Nicolson; 2 Jack Angus and Jai Wilkes, Elgin; 3 Jamie Rathie and Lewis Steven; consolation runners-Up – Cameron Forbes and Jack Sinclair.

Girls’ doubles: 2 Amy Sutherland and Chloe Leask, Orkney; 3 April Steven and D’Arcey Taylor.

Mixed doubles: 1 Liam Sinclair and Amie Roger, Moray; 3eq Finlay Nicolson and Amy Sutherland, Jamie Rathie and D’Arcey Taylor; consolation runners-up – Lewis Steven and April Steven.

U15 – Boys’ singles: 3 Dhaill Mackay and Angus Mackay; quarter-finals – Rory Nicolson; consolation runner-up – Pátraic O’Prey.

Finlay McDonald had to withdraw after his match due to an ankle injury.

Girls’ singles: 3 Ashlyn Gunn; consolation winner – Sophie Sinclair; consolation runner-up – Lexie Mackenzie; consolation stages – Miriam Williamson.

Boys’ doubles: 1 Rory Nicolson and Angus Mackay; 2 Dhaill Mackay and Murray Clark, Orkney; 3 Pátraic O’Prey and Drew Murdoch, Moray.

Girls’ doubles: 1 Ashlyn Gunn and Josie Columbine, Fortrose; 3 Sophie Sinclair and Lexie Mackenzie; 4 Miriam Williamson and Diana Lloyd, Fortrose.

Mixed doubles: 2 Rory Nicolson and Ashlyn Gunn; 3 Angus Mackay and Sophie Sinclair; consolation winners – Dhaill Mackay and Rose Christie, Elgin; consolation runners-up – Pátraic O’Prey and Lexie Mackenzie.

Kerry Mackenzie, of Caithness Junior Badminton Club, said: “There were some great games of badminton throughout the day and it was great to see so many Caithness players take part – so a huge well done to everyone.

“Special mention to Liam Sinclair on winning the treble title. Also to Rory Nicolson and Ashlyn Gunn on winning double titles.”
