The Caithness husband-and-wife duo of Mark and Shona Mackay emerged as mixed doubles winners in the Highland senior badminton championships held in Inverness and Fortrose.

They got the better of Calum Flockhart and Brooke Stalker 21-10, 23-21 in a closely contested final.

Mark made it a double by taking the men's singles, defeating Jordan Edgar 21-12, 21-8, while Shona lost out to Emma Donald in a ladies' singles final that went the full distance (19-21, 21-19, 21-14).

Mark and another of the Caithness contingent, Martyn Cook, were beaten in the men's doubles final by Kenneth Cheung and Calum Flockhart.

The championships attracted a big turnout of 93 players over the weekend of April 30 and May 1.

The level doubles events began first on the Saturday, followed by the mixed doubles, at Inverness Royal Academy. The singles took place on the Sunday at the Black Isle Leisure Centre.

All disciplines were a straight knockout with a plate event.

Organisers said it had been "a great showcase of badminton", with outstanding quality from the first round right through to the finals. They praised the many volunteers who helped get more than 180 games on court over the weekend.
