Thurso manager Tom McKenna hopes the players share his level of disappointment over last weekend’s defeat to lowly Bunillidh Thistle.

The North Caledonian League’s bottom club picked up their first points of the season as they ran out 2-0 winners at Couper Park in Helmsdale.

The goals came from Aaron Grant in the first half and Ally Macrae in the second.

“It was a disappointing performance to witness after showing great promise of progression against Golspie,” McKenna said. “We quite simply didn’t do enough to win the game.

“I can’t take anything away from Bunillidh – they thoroughly deserved the three points and they wanted it more.

“When you only have one shot on target and three decent crosses of note over the duration of a football match then you can’t expect to get much in return.

“The two goals we conceded were very much avoidable. We should have dealt with both situations with more calmness and with better pressure on the ball.”

Thurso remain third from bottom of the 12-team league on six points from 10 games. The two teams below them are Clachnacuddin “A” with four points and Bunillidh on three points from the same number of matches.

The Vikings are at home on Saturday to eighth-placed Fort William.

McKenna said: “I’m hoping the players are as disappointed as me and are looking forward to this weekend’s fixture against Fort William to make amends. It’s going to be another tough game.”

It’s third versus second at North Kessock on Saturday as Inverness Athletic take on Invergordon, with both sides looking to put more pressure on leaders Halkirk United. Golspie are at home to Orkney.
