IN Caithness Cycling Club’s weekly 10-mile time trial Allan Sutherland took first place with Darren Bain just edging out Dave Morrill for second.

Rob Murdoch led in the juniors and 14-year-old Joe Spencer had an encouraging first ride. The event was switched to the slower Shebster course due to road closure and, despite good conditions with little wind and light rain, times were typically about a minute down on normal.

John Falconer and Morrill were closest to their season’s bests and so scored most points in the handicap league.

Results: 1, A. Sutherland, 25 min 10 sec; 2, D. Bain, 25.34; 3, D. Morrill, 25.36; 4, J. Falconer, 26.28; 5, R. Murdoch, 26.42; 6, P. Cartwright, 27.43; 7, D. Spencer, 29.36; 8, S. Coulden-Smith, 30.38; 9, G. Angus, 31.33; 10, J. Spencer, 32.12; 11, J. Sinclair, 33.05.

With just three events remaining in the handicap league Roger Broughton has a one-point lead over Sutherland but Bain and Phil Cartwright are well within range.

Leading positions: 1, R. Broughton (38 points); 2, A. Sutherland (37); 3, D. Bain (32.5); 4, P. Cartwright (29); 5, J. Falconer (26.5); 6, H. MacKay.

Later in the week Sutherland was in action again, competing in the Ross-shire Roads’ 25-mile time trial at Garve on Saturday evening.

This is an attractive course but a very exposed one with a number of tough uphill drags and was made harder by a headwind on the 13.5-mile leg to the turn. Sutherland clocked a very respectable time for the conditions of 1h 5 min 59 sec but there were some outstanding times from the high-quality field, led by former Commonwealth Games rider James Millar with a superb 55 min 38 sec.

Results: 1, J. Millar (Dooleys Cycles), 55 min 38 sec; 2, P. Rodden (Moray Firth CC), 57.34; 3, G. Shirley (Nevis Cycles), 57.54; 4, J. McLoughlin (Forres CC), 59.02; 5, G. Grant (Square Wheels), 59.36; 6, A. McCaffery (Ross-shire RCC), 59.38; 15, A. Sutherland (CCC), 1.5.59.

This weekend members compete in the club’s local 50-mile time trial which starts and finishes in Thurso.
