Shuttlecock talent in abundance as thrilling contests unfold at Caithness Junior Badminton Club’s venue in Wick

Caithness Junior Badminton Club held a Highland Badminton Group Area Junior Restricted at the East Caithness Community Facility in Wick last weekend.

A total of 44 players from Orkney, Western Isles, Skye, Moray and Caithness competed in the competition.

In the Under-13 Boys Singles, Liam Sinclair from Wick came out on top only dropping 23 points over eight sets. Runner-Up was Finlay Nicolson, Wick and in third place was Jamie Rathie, Thurso.

In the Under-13 Girls Singles Josie Columbine of Black Isle beat Sophie Mackay from Dunnet in the final. top the group and Wick’s 21-14, 22-20.

In the Boys Doubles Finlay Nicolson and Liam Sinclair from Wick beat Thurso duo Jamie Rathie and Pátraic O’Prey in the final 21-5, 21-6.

In the Girls Doubles Josie Columbine and Sophie Mackay claimed the title with Wick pairing Sophie Sinclair and Emily Mackenzie in second place.

In the Mixed Doubles, topping the table was Liam Sinclair and Sophie Mackay.

In the Under 15s Boys Singles, Drew Murdoch of Moray proved took the title beating Rory Nicolson 21-9, 21-8 in the final.

The Consolation final saw Dhaill Mackay from Dunnet beat Ruaridh Kean 21-11 in the final.

In the Girls Singles, Isla Fraser from Stornoway beat Ashlyn Gunn from Wick 21-13, 21-10.

In the Boys’ Doubles, Drew Murdoch and Finlay Macdonald were victorious while in the Girls Doubles Ashlyn Gunn and Isla Fraser claimed the title.

In the Mixed Doubles, the title was won by Stornoway duo Drew Murdoch and Isla Fraser.

In the Consolation competition Wicks’ Blayr Howden and Calum Aitken beat Wick’s Owen Malcolm and Rhea Bruce.

In the Under-17s Boys Singles, Calum Mackenzie from Skye beat Qida Du from Wick in the final 21-11, 21-16.

In the Girls Singles, Chloe Mackenzie, Dunnet topped the group with Ava Cook, Thurso runner up and Chloe Begg from Wick third.

Skye’s Calum Mackenzie and Wick’s Brody Mackenzie won the Boys Doubles with Wick duo Chloe Mackenzie and Ava Cook winning the girls’ doubles.

Skye’s Calum Mackenzie and Dunnet’s Chloe Mackenzie claimed victory in the mixed doubles.

Tournament organiser Kerry Mackenzie said: “There were a lot of excellent games over the two days and all the participants played well, many thanks to all those for taking part and travelling. Special mention must go to our treble winners Liam Sinclair, Isla Fraser, Chloe Mackenzie and Calum Mackenzie, also to our double winners Sophie Mackay, Josie Columbine and Drew Murdoch.
