A NEW exhibition by talented young locals has opened at the North Lands Creative (NLC) gallery at Quatre Bras in Lybster.

The show, called Lybster Young Contemporaries, features photography, glass, ceramics and masks made by young people in the Lybster area over summer and in the last school term.

The photography was created at this year’s inaugural young persons summer class at Seaview House – the base of Lybster, Latheron and Clyth Community Development Company (LLCCDC).

Tom Briscoe, LLCCDC centre manager, said: “The initial idea was to introduce young people to professional photography using professional cameras. The group explored photography techniques using a DSLR camera, which included depth of field, composition and so forth.”

The class, taught by local professional photographer Angus Mackay, comprised four talented young photographers from the Lybster area – Eilidh McPhee, Findlay Gunn, Mackenzie Gordon and Skye Waterston.

The exhibition features photographs and a slideshow of the work made over the summer, with a stunning array of images captured around Lybster and portraiture of the young photographers themselves.

Thirteen-year-old Eilidh, who attends Wick High School, said: "This is my first time doing professional photography. It was difficult at first but once we got used to doing all the settings it got much easier.

"We put a lot of time into it and it's great to see all the work we did over the summer come together in the show here."

Included in the exhibition is work made at NLC's Community Design House by students from years six and seven at Lybster Primary School as part of their Friday afternoon options. Twelve young people visited the Community Design House over the past six weeks to make ceramics and masks with learning and engagement officer Merran Gunn.

“I have so enjoyed working with this amazing group of school kids,” Merran said. “The creative expression and range of work made by the group was matched by incredible focus and ability to learn new skills and have fun and experiment.

"It has been a wonderful opportunity to be able to display this, and the young photographers’ work, in the beautiful setting of the North Lands Creative gallery.”

Also exhibited are glass art pieces made by young people at the Youth "Glas" Festival in the summer. This collaborative glass installation follows a lively theme of "under the sea".

Lybster Young Contemporaries runs until October 25 at the Quatre Bras gallery (open Monday to Friday, 9am-5.30pm).
