A sheriff has taken steps to ensure a woman from Thurso will not be bothered by a man who upset her.

William McPhee has been banned from contacting the woman after he appeared at Wick Sheriff Court this week.

The court heard the 58-year-old turned up drunk at the woman’s home in Thurso on July 23 and shouted and swore at her before falling asleep on her kitchen floor.

Fiscal David Barclay said that the woman and McPhee had only known each other for five or six days before the incident and their relationship was “nothing more than a friendship”.

Mr Barclay said that police who were contacted spoke to the woman, who was “very upset and frightened”, and added: “The accused’s behaviour was something of a shock to her.”

The court heard the woman wished to have no further contact with McPhee, who admitted disorderly conduct. He was said to have since left the county.

Mr Barclay suggested a non-harassment order might be appropriate, given that social media enabled people to get in touch even though they did not live close to each other.

Sheriff Andrew Berry accepted that McPhee’s previous record did not involve recent convictions but he nevertheless referred to his earlier history of offending which was “peppered” with offences of violence and disorder as well as road traffic charges and drugs possession matters.

He is also currently on bail for what the court was told was a “serious” allegation.

McPhee was banned from having contact with the woman for two years and ordered to carry out 90 hours of unpaid work.
