Wick weather watcher says it’s a winter record breaker

Wick’s weather watcher says that the first day of winter turned out to be a record breaker for the town.

Keith Banks noted that the daily 24-hour minimum air temperature for December 1 did not fall below “a remarkable” 10.5C (50.9F) while the average minimum air temperature for the town in December is just 1.7C (35.1F).

He continues: “The previous record for highest daily minimum for December in Wick was 10.0C (50.0F), recorded on December 8, 1974.

“The daily maximum for December 1 was 11.9C (53.4F). The average daily maximum for Wick in December is 6.8C (44.2F).”

Keith adds that the unseasonal temperatures experienced during the first day of the meteorological winter were caused by a broad south-to-south-westerly airflow that sourced warm air from the sub-tropical regions of the North Atlantic.
