MEMBERS of Wick Paths Group took on their biggest project yet at the weekend when they worked on the March Road path at the edge of the town.

The path runs from the southern edge of the cemetery on South Road out to the Castle of Old Wick and is approximately 0.8 of a mile long.

Earlier in the year Ian Campbell scraped away the vegetation and levelled it and the group obtained 100 tonnes of tar planings, thanks to the support of Wick John O'Groats Airport, and this was transported onto the site with the help of GMR Henderson.

On Saturday a band of volunteers spread that massive amount of stone along the path and were helped by a number of local runners who had already done their early morning 13 miles.

The paths group chairman Allan Tait said: "I would like to express my thanks for the tremendous efforts of the volunteers, who would have slept well after their hard work, and for the great support the group receives from local businesses, with thanks again to Subsea 7, MM Miller, Hugh Simpson for the loan of machinery and Graham Begg for access through his land. Also thanks to Graham, Willie Watt and Michael Miller for operating the heavy machinery."

The path provides access to the castle and on to the John O'Groats Trail and hopefully will continue to be well used by walkers, cyclists and runners enjoying the county's coastline.

Heavy machinery was drafted in to help surface the path.
