With many homes in Caithness sporting Halloween decorations in gardens and windows, there is one Wick worthy who gives all-year-round scares if you see him in the right light.

Viewed from a certain vantage point on Union Street, a gnarly old tree sited on the Academy Braes appears like a screaming demon and perhaps more terrifying than the myriad of skulls, ghosts, witches and monster pumpkins currently inhabiting the town.

In daylight, however, the same tree appears to be having a laugh and maybe not quite so scary.

There is also a passing resemblance to the Marvel comic book character called Groot – an extraterrestrial, sentient tree-like creature who has appeared in comics, films and television programmes.

Perhaps a fitting name for the tree could be Jan de Groot after the famous 15th century Dutchman who ran a ferry from the village he lent his name to 17 miles away – John O'Groats.

Could this monster pumpkin be the largest grown in Caithness?
