Drivers who use a shortcut in Wick town centre could find themselves having to fork out a fine.

At fault are those who drive from the Camps direction into a pedestrian area to link up with Bridge Street and High Street.

Wick Sheriff Court heard on Tuesday that unemployed Tony McPhee was caught on the morning of September 10, failing to comply with the restriction.

The only exception is commercial vehicles unloading.

The 30-year-old from Calder Square, Castletown, was offered a fixed penalty but failed to lodge the required £50, although he claimed he tried unsuccessfully to do so on several occasions.

The first offender was fined £65.

Sheriff Andrew Berry said: "It is a route that I have seen many, many local people take" but added that people using it should take note that it is not a legal shortcut.
