Wick's festive season will officially begin on Saturday with the eagerly awaited switch-on of the lights at the Christmas tree in Market Square.

The event had been planned for last weekend but was postponed after the damaging gusts of Storm Arwen began sweeping across the north on Friday.

Market stalls in the town centre will add to the seasonal atmosphere of Wick Fun Day, while the children's umbrella parade from the riverside will be led by Santa in his sleigh.

Claire Mackenzie, chairperson of Wick Christmas Lights Committee, said: "We are all systems go for Saturday. Unfortunately as a committee we felt it safer for everyone to postpone last weekend.

"Alongside us this year is the first community market held by the newly formed Wick Community Market group. We can't wait to see everyone and get our wee town into the Christmas spirit."

The umbrella parade is scheduled to start at the boating shed at 3.15pm.
