Wick primary pupils introduce walking train to promote healthy school travel

Pupils at Newton Park Primary in Wick have been putting their best feet forward as part of a new “walking train” initiative.

The walk-to-school club was launched last term by children in the Rights Respecting Schools group.

The initiative was developed to promote a healthy lifestyle, reduce car pollution, support punctuality, and provide pupils with a chance to socialise on the way to school.

The walking train operates across five designated meeting zones, covering a wide area of the school’s catchment and ensuring all pupils have the opportunity to take part.

The school said that the response from families has been overwhelmingly positive with strong weekly participation.

Children as young as three, families with prams, grandparents, and even dogs can be seen joining the walk. Their involvement reflects the community’s shared commitment to the scheme’s goals, depute head teacher Vikki Bremner said.

The walking train has quickly become a valued part of the school routine, supporting both wellbeing and environmental awareness, she added.
