A Wick man celebrates with this week's free online presentation of his new experimental film about gay men and capitalism – Gayboys: The Movie

Craig Manson's £14k production was originally going to be a live show performed at the Outskirts Festival in Glasgow in April 2020 and will hopefully be developed as a live performance next year.

Craig said: "I'm originally from Wick and moved to Glasgow in 2012 to study at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS). I'm a performer and performance maker who has been making new, experimental shows around the UK since 2016."

He said that he worked with Wick Players in the past and had "always been interested in acting and performance" before deciding that he wanted to make it his career.

"I realised that I had a talent for devising, and was accepted onto the Contemporary Performance Practice course at the RCS, graduating with a first-class honours degree in 2016.

"A lot of the shows I make are influenced by my experience of growing up as a gay man in Caithness. I applied to Creative Scotland in 2019 to develop this new performance and was successful in my application, being awarded a total budget of £14,000 to create the show."

Craig says that this week's show is an experimental performance about gay men and capitalism and that the creative team only had one week of development time in 2020 before lockdown came into place.

"As lockdown continued, we redistributed the funding to instead explore some of the elements of the show for film. In October and November 2020, we had a week of development at Tramway and the Centre For Contemporary Art in Glasgow before filming commenced.

Gayboys: The Movie synopsis: The film opens with two gay men posing for a camera as their simultaneous enthusiasm and bewilderment for what they are doing gives way to a growing physical dialogue. Like a pair of Adonises, they flow from one statuesque image to another; they sigh and pout and seductively perform for their online viewers; they lay around, bored on their phones, waiting for something to happen. But who is it all really for?

Gayboys: The Movie can be watched online for free on Thursday (April 15) at 7pm by registering at the following link www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/gayboys-the-movie-tickets-149549583831

There will be a Q&A with Craig after the performance.
